What is Meta Muse Spark?

Meta Muse Spark is the most powerful AI model Meta has ever released. Launched on April 8, 2026 by Meta Superintelligence Labs — the AI division led by Alexandr Wang, formerly of Scale AI — Muse Spark is the first model in Meta’s new “Muse” family and a complete ground-up rebuild of the company’s entire AI system.

Unlike Meta’s previous Llama models which were open-source, Muse Spark is a proprietary, natively multimodal reasoning model. This means it was built with vision and language capabilities from the very beginning — not added on later. It supports tool-use, visual chain-of-thought reasoning, and Contemplating mode (multi-agent orchestration).

💡 Quick fact: Meta spent 9 months and over $14.3 billion rebuilding its AI stack to produce Muse Spark. The model is available for free at meta.ai and the Meta AI app — no subscription required.

Reasoning Test Results

We tested Muse Spark on a range of reasoning challenges — from multi-step math problems to logical puzzles and scientific questions. The results were genuinely impressive for a first-generation model from Meta’s new stack.

On Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE) — one of the most challenging AI benchmarks ever created — Muse Spark scored 39.9% in standard mode. With Contemplating mode enabled, that score jumped to 58%, placing it just behind Gemini 3.1 Pro (44.7% standard) and GPT-5.4 (41.6% standard).

In our own testing on a 20-question multi-step reasoning set, Muse Spark answered 17 out of 20 correctly — getting tripped up on two highly abstract logic puzzles and one complex algebra problem. For comparison, in our informal testing, GPT-5.4 scored 19/20 on the same set.

Verdict on reasoning: Muse Spark is a genuine reasoning model — not just a fast-response chatbot. For most everyday reasoning tasks, it performs at or near the frontier level.

Meta Muse Spark full review: Vision and Multimodal Test

This is where Muse Spark genuinely shines. Because it was trained on vision and language together from day one — unlike models that have image understanding bolted on — its visual reasoning is noticeably more fluid and contextual than most competitors.

We tested it on:

  • Reading and interpreting complex charts and diagrams ✅ Excellent
  • Identifying objects and text in photos ✅ Very strong
  • Answering visual STEM questions (geometry, physics diagrams) ✅ Best-in-class
  • Troubleshooting appliances from photos ✅ Impressive and practical
  • Creating interactive mini-games from image prompts ✅ Unique and fun

Independent benchmarks from Artificial Analysis rate Muse Spark as the second-most capable vision model they have evaluated — behind only Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview.

Health AI Test

Meta made a bold claim: Muse Spark is a capable health AI assistant, trained with over 1,000 physicians. We put this to the test with nutrition questions, exercise queries, symptom information lookups, and medical terminology explanations.

The results were genuinely strong. Muse Spark scored 42.8 on HealthBench Hard — leading most consumer AI models in this category. It generated clear, accurate and well-sourced health information, complete with interactive visual displays for nutritional content and muscle diagrams for exercises.

⚠️ Important: While Muse Spark’s health information is impressively accurate, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider for medical decisions.

Coding Test

Coding is the one area where Muse Spark clearly lags behind the frontier. Meta has openly acknowledged this gap. In our testing with Python debugging, JavaScript function writing and API integration tasks, Muse Spark performed adequately for simple tasks but struggled with complex, multi-file coding problems.

On GDPval-AA (real-world work tasks benchmark), Muse Spark scores 1,427 — behind Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1,648) and GPT-5.4 (1,676). For coding-heavy workflows, Claude or GPT-5.4 remain stronger choices.

Contemplating Mode Review

Contemplating mode is Muse Spark’s most exciting and unique feature. Rather than having one AI agent think through a problem sequentially, Contemplating mode orchestrates multiple AI agents working in parallel — then reconciles their outputs for a superior answer.

The performance gains are real. On Humanity’s Last Exam, Contemplating mode pushes the score from 39.9% to 58% — a massive jump. On FrontierScience Research tasks, it scores 38%. Crucially, Meta achieves these gains without increasing latency — because parallel agents work simultaneously rather than one agent thinking for longer.

💡 Contemplating mode is being rolled out gradually to meta.ai users. It is not yet available to everyone but will become the default mode for hard queries over time.

A Major Comeback for Meta AI

Meta Muse Spark is a genuine frontier AI model — not a marketing exercise. For everyday users who want a powerful, free AI assistant with outstanding vision and health capabilities, it is one of the best options available in 2026. Its coding weakness keeps it from claiming the top spot, but for everything else, Muse Spark is impressive and worth using right now.

Frequently Asked Questions
